215/40 17 Tyre Review Highlights

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rated 77% while driving a Mazda
Driving on mostly country roads for 6000 spirited miles
Comparison Points:
Bridgestone Potenza Sport (OEM)
Falken Azenis FK510

The PS4 is a great allrounder. Having the best handling and grip in the wet from all my previous tires, it is a safe choice. The road feedback and dry handling was better on both my previously installed wheel types. The PS4 is comfortable from a damping perspective, but the tire noise is slightly higher than on both my previously used tire models. The PS4 is the best-wearing tire from the bunch - you can easily get two seasons, if not three out of one set. The downsides on the PS4 are most likely because of a slightly softer tire wall than the previously used tires. Although the PS4 is most likely the best allrounder tire, I'd prefer to get more dry road grip and better feedback from my next tires.

Accelera 651 Sport rated 51% while driving a Fiat 500 Abarth
Driving on a combination of roads for 4000 spirited miles
The Accelera 651 Sport is marketed as an All-Around multipurpose semi-slick; capable of enduring the demands of performance driving while also providing good road manners. I did not find this to be the case.

This review comes after having had two sets of these tyres(2k miles each) in their 200 Treadwear compound fitted to my 290hp big turbo Abarth 500; each time only enduring one trackday before being rendered useless. Tyre temperatures were monitored and pressures were set to 30PSI hot, front and rear for trackdays. 30PSI cold for road use.

Dry grip was comparable to a budget road tyre, non-existent and inconsistent. On track they displayed a significant oversteer bias with inconsistent front axle grip and really rather soft sidewalls for a semi-slick. The surface of the tyres wore quite heavily on the inside edge, suggesting they are not suited to aggressive front end alignments in "grip" use, front axle camber was set to -3.5 degrees, backed off to -1.7 after multiple laps. Rear axle camber was -0.5, rear tyres wore reasonably evenly.

In the wet these tyres offer about 70% of the grip they have in the dry, suggesting the tread pattern is really rather good at evacuating water and the compound is not too terribly temperature sensitive.

Speaking of temperature, these tyres withstood multiple heat cycles with no real drop in performance over their lifespan, so(as suggested by the website) would probably make very good rear axle tyres for high power drift cars. Minimal feathering was observed by the end of each trackday.

On the road, these were extremely noisy(even more so than any other track tyre I've ever used), wore at an accelerated rate, were very squirrely in the wet at 50% and below tread depth and despite having soft sidewalls for track use were extremely stiff on the road.

I would recommend the 651 Sport if you are needing an *extremely* affordable semi-slick on the rear axle of a front wheel drive track car or are trying to encourage oversteer in a FWD track car. Otherwise, you would be better served by the Nankang NS2R 180TW tyre in similar sizing which has longer life, better grip, better feedback, is less sensitive to aggressive geometry and has similar heat management.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 rated 89% while driving a Ford Fiesta ST180
Driving on a combination of roads for 15000 spirited miles
I really enjoyed these tyres. They have excellent grip in the dry and good in wet as well. Are a bit noisy but not too bad. Had them on for 20000+ kilometers including around 10 track days. The fronts were just changeg to Asymmetric 6s, the rears still have plenty of meat on them.

Bridgestone Potenza Sport rated 81% while driving a SEAT Ibiza Cupra 20VT
Driving on mostly country roads for 15000 spirited miles
This is an end of life review.

The Bridgestone Potenza Sport is an excellent sporty tire. It has good grip in the dry and resists the hot 35C summers here in Greece well. They are neutral at the limit, allowing me to control the rotation of the car with the accelerator if needed. Steering feedback is above average (though my Ibiza with its electrohydraulic rack is not the most communicative platform. Braking distance is excellent both on dry and wet surfaces. Wet grip is decent for the low tread the tires come from the factory, and handling balance there has a tiny hint of oversteer, but its so little that even the ESP doesn't activate.

Comfort and noise take a step back, but I don't really care about such trivial things. Tire life is also shorter compared to the PS4, but the upsides make up for it. Lastly, the price is very reasonable at around 420€/set. I'll fit them again next month when it's time to change tires.

Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Plus rated 99% while driving a SEAT 1.4 TSI
Driving on mostly motorways for 2000 easy going miles
I drove 2000 kilometers in my Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ 215/40R17 87V XL FP Mini Sport Coupe Ibiza CUPRA in the last 15 days. My first impressions are that the tires showed excellent performance and grip on wet, dry and snowy roads. I got the performance I expected without any worries, the tires are great, I recommend it to everyone.

Continental Premium Contact 6 rated 87% while driving a Volkswagen Polo 1.0TSI
Driving on mostly motorways for 6676 spirited miles
These tyres came OE with my 2022 VW Polo and I have really mixed opinions about them Let's start off with the good They handle....amazing in dry conditions. Road feedback is superb and they do exactly what they need to. Too early for a wear review, but handling wise they handle amazing. Braking is top notch, wet handling is also actually pretty damn good. And the tyres are actually quite comfy too Now the bad The road noise is some of the worst I've ever experienced in a tyre. It's so bad that, even though they have only just over 6 000km on the set, I'm honestly considering changing them. That may not bother some people but it gets to me, especially that I do mostly highway and long trips It isn't necessarily a deal breaker, as the handling and feedback from the tyre is great. But just something to definitely consider when buying the tyre

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rated 74% while driving a SEAT Ibiza Cupra 1.4 TSI
Driving on a combination of roads for 25000 easy going miles
I use 215/40/17 87Y Michelin PS4s in my 2013 Ibiza CUPRA vehicle in the summer season, high performance summer tire for the summer heat on the Mediterranean coastline in the South of Turkey, it provides very safe handling even at high speeds on dry or heavy rainy roads, very safe after the tires are warmed up. it grips well, grips the road well, very fast and superior grip steering response on mountainous and tight curvy roads between cities, super slip on the panic brake on the dry city road when cold, ABS is activated very often, but I think the reason is because it is a low profile sporty tire with 40 sidewalls, about 25,000 since 2017 as a summer set of them. I use mileage, I have a separate set of tires for winter. I think that MICHELIN does not produce summer tires as long-lasting as winter tires, unfortunately PS4s were subject to rapid deformation despite low mileage and became old. I will replace them with ASYM 6s in the summer of 2023.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rated 76% while driving a Volkswagen
Driving on a combination of roads for 22000 spirited miles
An overall excellent tyre. Outstanding grip wet or dry. Since having PS4's fitted I've never been concerned with losing control of the car or if the car will do something unpredictable no matter the weather. However, below 4°C they do turn to bricks and it's quite noticeable, but they're a summer UHP tyre not a winter or all-season tyre. Braking is excellent with the ABS only kicking in under 35mph in the very unscientific test I did, cornering feels pretty good but you notice the tyre needing to be loaded up first before it properly bites which is especially apparent in chicanes but this only takes a second and can easily be accounted for. I had to really try to get the tyres to break traction pulling away in the dry which would only result in a small chirp and I could only get the tyres to spin in 1st and 2nd in the wet putting my foot to the floor. Coming from a mix of Accelera's (front) and Bridgestone's (rear) I have complete confidence in the car and have never been able to upset it and have ESC kick in. A number of times with the Accelera's I had the car understeer in the wet with ESC kicking in. On one particular occasion having the car go straight on at a roundabout doing only 28mph, reducing my steering input and braking did nothing it was luck and having a car with ESC that made it turn. On another occasion having the front wash wide on some back roads at a corner I'd taken at the same speed in another, much older Polo with Yokohama V701s fitted in a smaller size (195) and no fancy ESC and traction control systems perfectly fine. After those experiences, I ordered a set of PS4's within 2 weeks of getting the car and I now firmly believe that you get what you pay for with tyres and there's no point in getting something that is "as good as but". One thing to note is that after fitting a set of PS4's my MPG dropped from 44-46mpg to 39-42mpg on average. But I didn't buy them for their fuel economy and expected it to drop. On the odd occasion that I've been caught out by a corner being tighter than it seemed the tyre told me that it was at its limit but never let go and was very easy to predict and manage. Bumps and potholes can be felt more compared to the previous tyres that were fitted and road noise is quieter comparatively but in general, is still fairly loud. However, I believe that's just the car. It's a Polo, not an S-class Merc. The tyres came with around 7.5-8mm of tread and I'm now down to 3mm on the lowest tyre after 22,000 miles roughly of motorway, normal day-to-day use and spirited back road driving with no perceivable loss of performance wet and dry. I would buy the tyre again but newer tyres have been released which perform better. As Michelin dropped the 215/40/17 size from the PS5 I'll be getting a set of Goodyear Asym 6's to replace the PS4's in the coming months. Hopefully someone found this useful :)

Westlake SA 57 rated 76% while driving a Subaru BRZ
Driving on mostly town for 3500 spirited miles
Before I start the review I would just like to let you say this is a review for those who are interested in the performance of this tire being stretched. I bought 215/40R17 and stretched it on a 17x9 Enkei RPF1 wheel. I'm going to compare this to the stock Michelin Primacy tires that come with my car that I also stretched on the same wheel. I drove on these tires for my daily commute to work and around town. I only occasionally drove it down a winding road but not pushing the car too hard because of the stretch Similar to the Michelin Primacy maybe just a tad bit more grip. Not tons of grip but the tire has a very stiff sidewall which makes it good for stretching and gives very good road feedback Wet grip is not the best - it did tend to have a bit of hydroplane tendency past 130kph in really wet conditions. (I live in Pacific westcoast so we do see a lot of rain here) Wet driving around town 60-70kph is no problem. Road noise: Tire has a slight hum at higher speeds above 120kph. Not too obnoxious coming from a sports car however if put in a normal car it may be slightly annoying to some. Overall a very good tire especially if you are stretching them. I put them at 40psi and I daily drove it and not once did it debead. For how cheap they are I would say I would definitely recommend them for what they are. Its nothing amazing but for the price its a good value proposition.

Rapid p609 rated 43% while driving a Audi S1 Sportback
Driving on mostly town for 12000 spirited miles
Got them with the car (new tyres from used dealership) Ragged the balls off of this car and doing a fair few power slides too etc. Wear is surprisingly decent. Approaching i think 12k miles on these tyres. Worn down reletively ok, I'm happy as the way i drive doesnt give an easy life. Have done a few thousand motorway miles in all fairness. Dont buy for a performance car. Would fit these to my sister corsa for example but thats it. Dry grip is ok, nothing special. 0 feedback through the tyre. Knowing its a budget, have been a little hesitant to give it full beans but been ok so far. (well about to replace as very almost @ limit) Cant lean on the tyre much though. Wet grip is pretty shit and almost aquaplaned at well over 100 twice before (my fault I guess) Don't have much confidence in the wet with these tyres. Sometimes spins a little when cold in the mornings for example. (AWD Audi S1) Wouldnt buy again as theyre kinda crap but might as well abuse a free set of tyres.
