235/40 18 Tyre Review Highlights

Accelera 651 Sport XTRA rated 80% while driving a Toyota GR Yaris
Driving on track for 3000 spirited miles
I’ve been using this for this year’s track season on my GR Yaris after having previously used them on drift cars. Decided to be a bit more budget friendly after using A052’s last year, I knew there would be a trade off in lap time but at the same time a set of four 651 Xtras with one of the regular discounts they offer is the same price as one A052 which is a considerable saving.

The elephant in the room that everyone wants to know is the lap times. I have no doubt that a dedicated semi slick would be quicker than these, that’s not even up for debate. But they’re not marketed as being the fastest tyre, fundamentally they’re aimed at drifters and you can tell with how controllable they are past the limit. That limit is lower than the expensive tyres when it comes to lateral G’s but they’re also less prone to snapping on you too, choosing to slide progressively instead. For comparison’s sake when cornering I could manage 1.25G on an A052 but the 651 Xtra can only do 1.1G and I think that’s where the time is lost on a track.

My experiments with them on my GR Yaris however have yielded a new PB so far this year at Knockhill so they’re not exactly a slow tyre. They switch on quickly and with the occasional cool down lap I was doing 20 lap sessions on them, peak grip comes early but you know when it’s gone because I found myself starting to miss apexes. Cool them down and they come back to you.

I’ve taken them to Crail raceway and managed a 1.7s 60ft time on the concrete 1/4 mile track with 400hp and launch control which shows they have plenty of straight line traction, the road surface there is awful and dusty.

I’ve also been using them on the road daily since the weather has got a bit warmer. Stay away from them when it’s freezing out but when milder - say 8+C - they’re nice to drive on. Steering feels pointy and they’re progressive when you want to accidentally slide on “oil” on roundabouts.

In terms of wear I’ve done 3 trackdays and a couple thousand miles on the road and despite the 100TW fears they’re holding up well. All four tyres still have 3-4mm left, wear is pretty even except for the front left which has been the one to go first around Knockhill with the heavy right handers, the surface looks a bit melty. But still life in them.

If you just want to go to the track, drive around enjoying yourself all day and get home afterwards I can’t think of a better proposition for the money. Of course a tyre 3-4x the price will be quicker, these aren’t breaking the laws of physics. For under £100 a tyre with regular discounts they’re great for getting cheap seat time and having fun.

Would definitely buy these again.

Poor wet performance and I was not even driving like a mad person. Traction control constantly kicks in even when accelerating slowly when moving off from toll booth

Forceum HEXA rated 50% while driving a Honda Civic SI Coupe
Driving on a combination of roads for 9000 spirited miles
I had to leave this review to combat the unrealistic expectations of the tires by other reviewers.
This tire is $350us for a set of four. It’s the cheapest, softest, high performance tire available for someone on a budget or someone that burns through tires.(track days/drift days)
I put these on a weekend warrior/dd car with pretty low expectations because of price. This quickly changed.
Car drove great after alignment(anytime new tires are put on alignment should be done).
After a hard 100miles of scrubbing time and heat cycles these tires settled in nicely.
Dry grip was very good for a 400 tire. I’d say this tire is more 250-300 in wear category. It’s no falken Azenis. But it’s definitely not all season. It’s a good entry level high performance only tire. Once the tire built heat tire would start marbling. This would only happen when driven very hard on hot 90°f+ days.
I did find the performance edge of the tire very quickly when cold(0 road heat). When hot it’s a little more forgiving. A beginner or someone that has 0 skill would have a hard time with this abrupt edge.
Wet grip was ok. It was very comparable to my Goodyear eagle sport all seasons. Definitely not a tire i would race on in the wet or drive with spirit on road when wet.
Winter. This tire is not an all season tire. It is not a winter tire. This is a soft compound tire. A soft compound needs heat to work. Cold and soft tires do not mix.
Noise level was good. Again it’s a high performance tire with a soft compound for $350. Most people running this kinda tire have cars loud enough to not hear a tire.
Tread wear. They say this tire is a 400aa tire. But I can tell after a few thousand miles it was obvious that it’s lower. I got just shy of 10,000miles out of them. Putting them in a 250-300 range in my opinion. This is comparing them the falken and federals we have ran in the past.
However, I do believe that I could have got closer to 15k to 20k out of the tire IF we ran 0-1° of camber instead of the current 2-2.5°.
Once the tire wore in from camber from daily driving this is where the tire got noisy. But again. Nature of the beast.. I will absolutely will continue to run the tire on all of my vehicles in the category.
This tire is a fantastic low budget high performance tire. But you have to understand what your buying and lower the expectations. This is not a $150-250 tire, it’s $75. It’s a tire you can buy a lot of and burn off at drift days. It’s a tire that will absolutely get you though a track day or 7 depending on temperature and skill.

Michelin e.Primacy rated 56% while driving a Ford Falcon XF X_PAK
Driving on a combination of roads for 4500 spirited miles
My car came new with these tires. I had driven a 2020 ford Focus before this one, with Michelin Crossclimate 2 mounted and they where just overall much better. Recently my car is fitted with the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen 3 and what a relief. The car is quieter, feels much more grippy, especially in the wet and brought back the "Ford Focus Feeling" to the car.

I would definitly not recommend these tires to anyone.

Yokohama ADVAN APEX V601 rated 84% while driving a Honda Civic FK7 Sport
Driving on mostly motorways for 18000 spirited miles
Started using a set of this Yokohama Advan APEX since late last year.
Dry Grip and the handling feedback is just great and sticky! Taking out of the corner is easy, gripped and gives you so much confidence. I like the road feedback, superb on dry surface (at a speed of 165 km/h) and also good on a wet surface (at a speed 120 km/h). Sometimes a bit struggle with traction (slightly on a higher-side of speed) but manageable. Basically the wet grip is just better than other normal UHP tires but a bit lower than those Michelin PS4 / Continental CSC7.
On a comfort side, I guess due to a stiff sidewall, it makes the road feedback better but like me, I prefer feedback over comfort.
Tire wear, I've been running close to 30,000KM on my Honda Civic FK7 Sport and the tread left approximately 35% left.
Overall, I love this tires, a bit cheaper than a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (which is the set that I am using before I change it to this Advan APEX) and also I would buy again. Love the grip and also love the sidewall design too ;-)

###Do not buy this tyre###

No grip whatsoever, wheel spinning whenever I accelerate hard and not from a start, even in 3rd gear... And this is a 235 section tyre, i'll let imagine the narrower versions...

I had 205 55 16 continental premiumcontact6 in a ford focus mk2 1.8 tdci, a torque monster in low-mid rpm and it never break a sweat! Largely superior performancing tyre!

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 rated 96% while driving a Volkswagen CC
Driving on a combination of roads for 5000 spirited miles
I've driven my GY ASYM6 for more than 7k km now and I can say fullhearted that it saved me more than once due to its superior handling and breaking power. No squeaking, no ABS taking control, no heart in your guts, just tons of grip both in wet and dry conditions. However, this shouldn't come as a surprise considering the premium badge. On the down side, the noise is somewhat obvious, especially considering my frameless doors.

Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT rated 85% while driving a Volkswagen Golf GTI 7.5
Driving on a combination of roads for 500 spirited miles
This is an initial impressions review of the Sport Maxx GT on my Golf GTI so unable to comment on wear. Will focus mainly on performance and feel during warm weather driving.

Dry grip is very good. No complaints whatsover. Slightly better than the Falken FK510, another popular UHP summer tyre. The tyres turn well without much understeer and the car darts into corners. Feedback is perhaps not the best but the tyres are predictable and placing the car is easy.

Wet grip is very good as well. Drove on these tyres through a tropical storm and they felt planted and never hydroplaned even with puddles all over the roads. Of course, this is dependent on driving sensibly. Drive like a hooligan in the rain and you’ll crash regardless of whatever tyres you fit.

Comfort and noise level is decent. The tyre isn’t harsh over bumps and noise level is acceptable by UHP standards. If this is your priority, get touring tyres instead!

Overall, very good first impressions when fitted on a FWD hot hatch. Price wise, it undercuts all the big brands by quite some margin. Does everything reasonably well, at least in warm climates.
