245/50 20 Tyre Review Highlights

Continental Cross Contact LX Sport rated 54% while driving a Lincoln
Driving on mostly town for 31 average miles
The worse wearing tires I have had in literally 50 years. Lasted 31 K- mi. over 4 years in winter and summer conditions. A rather expensive tire for a short life.

Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 rated 69% while driving a Ford 05 Mondeo 185 (modded) diesel
Driving on a combination of roads for 5000 average miles
This is my 4th set of Pirelli Scorpion tires on 2 different vehicles. 3 sets were the Verde version and this last one is the a/s 3. The Scorpion versions were wonderful tires and thus the reason for buying Pirelli’s again. After a little over 5000 miles two of the four tires developed bubbles in the sidewalls. There was no wheel damage nor was there any visible damage to the inside of the tire. Pirelli would not replace the tires, stating that we had hit either a pothole or curb. I could agree with them if there was visible wheel or tire damage, but there was none. Their response seemed automatic…a bubble can only be caused by hitting something. Both my wife and I are careful to avoid bouncing off curbs, and we don’t have potholes in our area of TN. Very disappointed with Pirelli and will consider this incident when buying tires in the future.

Goodyear Eagle Sport All Season rated 41% while driving a Acura MDX
Driving on a combination of roads for 0 average miles
Tires are terrible for comfort (hard as a rock), feel every bump. I really want to like this tire as it looks good, but that's about it. Had them on for 3 months and need to replace them.

Continental VikingContact 7 rated 63% while driving a Jaguar I Pace
Driving on mostly town for 14000 average miles
Tires have mostly worn out after only 20,000 km. Unacceptable! They’re great running tires but lifespan is too short to recomnend.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV rated 78% while driving a Ford Edge
Driving on a combination of roads for 27180 spirited miles
Had these on a owned since new 2014 Ford Edge Limited 245/40/r20 stick wheels for 46,000kms and 21 months. Rotated every 12,000kms and filled with nitrogen and laser alignment when installed. First 16 months were very grippy, smooth and comfortable. They felt like a premium tyre. Still the same afterwards except became very noisy and harder but not like the bricks that the OEM stock Pirelli Scorpion STR’s were. Noise due to tyre wear is probably due to extreme heat of the asphalt here in Dubai for 6 months of the year. From new I noticed slight rise in fuel consumption compared to the previous Pirelli Scorpion Verde AS tyres which were replaced after 24 months when they became too noisy too despite having 1/3 tread left before reaching the wear indicator. The Michelin’s were significantly better for comfort and performance - the Edge could be flung into bends with full confidence while the Pirelli’s would be noticeably jittery. Difference between UHP tyre and All Season tyre. All in all a great tyre but the noise became too intrusive. I’ve always installed premium brand tyres on my vehicles but having spent 3,500DHS (£700 GBP) on the Michelin’s for only 21 months use I’ve decided to go to medium range brand - NEXEN N-FERA RU5 AS tyres at less than half the cost (1,600DHS/ £320 GBP) to mollify the wife and bank manager. Reviews of the NEXEN overall are positive with only negatives being on snow (no chance here in Dubai). It was them or the Kumho Crugen HP71 or Nankang SP9 Cross Sport’s. I’ll review the NEXEN’s once I’ve put a decent amount of mileage on them but I expect them to last at least 24 months/50,000kms before they too succumb to the effects of road heat and spirited driving. At least the replacement cost will have reduced significantly! The Michelin PS 4 SUV are recommended but only for deep pockets if you live in very hot climate. Based on my experience with them I give them 8 out of 10.

Nokian zLine SUV rated 86% while driving a Dodge Nitro
Driving on a combination of roads for 12000 average miles
Great tyres. Changed the back last August and done around 12K on them - showing very little wear at all. Excellent in the wet and responsive and full of grip on dry roads. Just ordered another two for the front now my Pirelli Scorpions have worn out - the Nokians are the best tyre I've had on the Dodge, much better than the OEM Goodyear Eagle RSA.

Goodyear Eagle RS A rated 46% while driving a Dodge Nitro
Driving on mostly motorways for 6000 average miles
Grip in dry weather is ok,but in wet weather i would sooner walk.the compound
is so hard i think they will last forever so i am buying another set of wheels
and tyres just to get rid of them.
