2020 Motorcycle Sports Touring Tyre Test - 1st of 6 tyres

  • Overall - Excellent steering, felt the sportiest of the bunch. They make the bike feel light and nimble with precise steering, excellent levels of confidence, very stable, good levels of grip from cold. Ride quality is a little harsher than some of the other tyres in the test, but lots of feedback and feel. Wonderful tyres.

Given 97% while driving a Suzuki GSX S1000 (190/55 R17) on mostly country roads for 10,000 average miles
Rear tyre fitted to gsx s1000f. Done 10k touring/fast touring miles. Overall impressive with the tyre, with just occasional slide grips on very fast sharp bends (but always kept get the grip back!). Done also fast mountains roads in wet, felt as on dry (but that depends on the road surface). Covered me trips through 20 countries overall! Never had a front, so can't say (I've run through BT 23 & M9 RR and both can highly recommend for road use).

Given 64% while driving a Ducati Multistrada 1200 (190/55 R17) on mostly motorways for 6,500 spirited miles
Fitted brand new Roadtec on my Miltistrada 1200s. Handling on dry was just perfect, sharp corners, fast coreners, feedback from the road just perfect. But, terrible grip on wet or dusty or any other non-pure-tarmac road. Lasted for about 10k km, with agressive style, 180km/h speeds, wheelie etc. But than, having around 1mm yet to wear started to get wholes in tyre from any small piece of stone on road. Had 4 wholes during my last trip in mountains, and had to swap imeediately in the middle of nowhere.
Overall nice tyre, for perfect roads only. Wouldn't sugest for those who plan to have long trips.

Given 94% while driving a BMW K1600 GTL (190/55 R17) on mostly country roads for 9,950 spirited miles
Lasted 16,000 km (just down to the centre tire wear bars) mostly on British Columbia Canada roads. Front - 120/70ZR17, Rear - 190/55ZR17. Goes into and comes out of corners effortlessly. Riding over a grated metal bridge deck is like riding on a smooth surface.

Latest Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE Reviews

Given 98% while driving a (170/60 R17) on mostly country roads for 200 spirited miles
I've just put a pair of these (120 x 70 x 17 front, 170 x 60 x 17 rear) on a 1996 Kawasaki GPZ1100 to replace Metzler Roadtec Z6. The bike is transformed, at 142kg dry it's no lightweight, it's always felt on the heavy side particularly at low speed, I was running the Z6 front tyre over recommended pressure to lighten the steering, at recommended pressure the steering was really heavy with very noticeable counter steering effort required to get it to lean, not nice. With these fitted and at recommended pressure the steering is light, the ride is much improved, much smoother, it tips into corners effortlessly without thinking about counter steering. Low speed handling is way lighter, and the front is noticeably quieter. It's like a different bike, in a good way. Dry grip is excellent, I've not driven with them in the wet so can't comment, and not had them long enough to comment on wear. Would I buy them again? Unless they wear quickly or some other anomaly appears with use, yes definitely.

Given 70% while driving a Yamaha MT 07 (180/55 R17 W) on mostly country roads for 1,000 spirited miles
Replaced my Spirit ST’s with Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE and now regret it. The Roadtecs look good and have excellent reviews but they are too hard and too heavy - they ride like they’re filled with concrete. The SE (Sports Edition) version of the Roadtecs are not sporty. I found Avon Spirit ST to be better tyres. Those are grippy and durable but also relatively lightweight and more compliant over uneven road surfaces. If you only ever ride on brand new tarmac then Roadtecs might be OK. If you enjoy the occasional rip around some twisty B roads or just want a smoother ride then Avon Spirit ST’s are a much better choice. They outperform Roadtecs, cost less and are made in the UK.
