Writing about the Kumho Ecsta KU31 given 79% (215-40-17-W)
Driving on mostly country roads for 17 spirited miles
In my eyes tyre choice is extremely important as they are the only thing that connects your vehicle to the road so should not be overlooked. I've been running Ecsta KU-31's for about 17,000 miles now and they are reaching the end of their life, so I think its fair to say given a spirited driving style mostly country roads & roundabouts they really are a long lasting tyre. Obviously this will fluctuating depending on the power of the vehicle fitted to.

These tyres operate well in the dry, with very good behaviour feedback in regular conditions inspiring confidence in the driver, however on the extreme limit they can catch you out through oversteer/understeer with little warning, but even still they will not just let go as some other cheaper tyres may. They always feel as if they want to hold on. Which is a reassuring feature.

They have a good level of comfort even though I have been using a low profile of 40. They are noticeably less competent in the wet/damp but not to the point of making the driver uneasy. I have used Eagle F1 gsd 2 & 3's in the past and I would not advise these as a direct comparison in performance as you WILL be dissapointed, but as a budget orientated "alternative" option that can be purchased up to nearly 50% les than some premium brands they are very desirable indeed! For sure they perform above their intended competitors bracket such as Falkens and other mid range tyres. In fact compared to my previous Continental Sport Contact 2's, these are much better in every area.

One small criticism is they have fairly poor wheel protection with regard to kerbing your alloys, but many tyres do not offer this. I would defnitely consider buying these again in the future, but I think I may change back to goodyear for that little extra performance even though a large price increase.

Overall Very good Performance vs Value tyre.

Writing about the Federal SS595 SUPER STEEL given 57% (225-40-18-W)
Driving on mostly country roads for 20000 average miles
Grip, progressiveness, wear and road feedback all pretty good. However, these are the noisiest tyres I have ever used; a high pitched whine/hum resonated through the car at speeds over 50 mph, and it sounded like all the wheel bearings were shot. I replaced the tyres before they were worn out just to protect my hearing (and my sanity). Horrible, would never buy again.

Writing about the Dunlop SP Sport 9000 given 46% (245-45-18-W)
Driving on a combination of roads for 5000 average miles
Good dry grip but still possible to spin the rears when pulling out, much worse in the wet. Noisy on poor surfaces and quite jarring on small imperfections at motorway speeds, both of these traits are dependant upon tyre pressure. At full load pressure the noise is much worse. generaly good around town at slow speeds. Back to a more conventional tread pattern for the next set.

Driving on a combination of roads for 8000 average miles
What a rubbish tyre. I bought these because I wanted a reasonable budget tyre. The tyre dealer I bought them from recommended them as good value and when I checked the internet the reports seemed good. I had two fitted to the rear. However after 8000 miles of average driving they are worn out. Not scuffed or damaged but the tread is just plain worn out. I couldn't believe it. From what I've read on this site I'm not the only one to have had this problem. I wish I had looked at this site before I bought them.
