2010 Auto Zeitung Ultra High Performance Summer Test

Pirelli P Zero: Winner!

Size tested: 235/40 R 18 | Vehicle: VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI

We'll keep this brief! In 2010 Auto Zeitung have tested 9 ultra high performance summer tyres on a 200bhp VW Scirocco.

The magazine covers aquaplaning resistance (where sensors determine the speed at which a tyre floats in 7mm of standing water), braking (from 62mph in both the wet and dry), a timed lap in the wet and dry, and how the cars respond on the limit. Added for this year, Auto Zeitung also tested the rolling resistance of each tyre using a dedicated machine.

Key highlights include:

  • The Pirelli P Zero and Continental Sport Contact 3 are very evenly matched in 1st and 2nd place
  • The new Bridgestone Potenza S001 was let down by it's average aquaplaning performance
  • The Hankook Ventus S1 Evo has another strong showing against the big brands, equalling the Bridgestones score
  • The Goodyear Eagle F1 continues to offer excellent dry and wet grip, but is let down by it's high rolling resistance
  • Disappointing results for both the new Pilot Sport 3 and the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta

Hmm, the Vredestein surprisingly performed poorly here. I ain't gonna consider it again after reading this. Goodyear F1 for me, best allrounder.
