235/70 16 Tyre Review Highlights

Cooper Discoverer Road Trail AT rated 81% while driving a Toyota RAV4
Driving on a combination of roads for 200 average miles
I picked up some Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail ATs for my 2017 RAV4 AWD, in 235/70r16. I haven't seen many reviews of these yet, so I wanted to give some of my thoughts. I've only had them for about a week so I can't give any advice on how they'll hold up, but I have loved them so far. In central PA, we've also had a nice variety of weather in the period since I've gotten them, so they've been tested in several conditions already.

Wet Traction - 9.5/10
Really confidence-inspiring wet grip. This is always a question mark with AT tires, but absolutely no trouble at all with these. Braking is especially impressive, even in standing water.

Dry Traction - 8/10
Nothing to complain about here - stopping distance and dry traction are both more than adequate for an all-terrain tire.

Snow Traction - 9/10
Really impressive snow traction. I tested in deep snow and a variety of slushy conditions. The RAV4 had no trouble at all going through 4-6 inches of snow (on grass), even even starting up a hill in those conditions provided no trouble at all. Braking is also impressive in the snow, inspiring confidence on my snow-covered driveway.

Comfort/Noise 8/10
They definitely are a little bit stiffer going over bumps than the standard all-season tires that were on the vehicle before, but nothing I would consider to be viscerally unpleasant. Noise is relatively silent, with the addition of maybe a very slight hum at highway speeds.

Overall, I have absolutely no regrets with my purchase, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these for a person who is interested in a fairly rugged tire that can handle all conditions adequately.

Avon Ranger rated 80% while driving a Land Rover Discovery 2
Driving on mostly country roads for 8000 average miles
I drive a 2001 TD5 D2 with a 2 inch lift. I can not fault these tyres for normal road use and occasions off road work. Very good in the snow and wet. I have been advised that using these tyres for a trip to Moroco may not be a good idea due to them being a re tread.

Avon Ranger rated 80% while driving a Jeep Libery
Driving on a combination of roads for 10000 average miles
These are a heavily treaded all terrain tyre. They are designed for the rough, They came new with 12mm of tread, they are 3 peak mountain snow rated. They are the same pattern as BFG all terrain MK1 at a fraction of the price. I paid £60 each. They have seen snow, mud and heavy rain over the last 12 to 18 months. I live in the Welsh Hills. The roads are pretty poor. These tyres are excellent. They grip in all conditions. They will push wide in the wet, but that's to be expected, they are not a high speed tyre. They are relatively noisy compared to road biased tyres, but not excessively. They don't make long journeys a drag. Fuel wise I have lost around 2mpg compared to the nexen Rodians that came on the Jeep. I have run them for 14 months and have lost 2mm tread. On motorway, and rural roads, back roads and off road tracks. They have a really stiff sidewall, they were hard to mount and had to be warmed to flex and be able to fit on the rim. However they balanced easily. Really good quality remould.

Cooper Discoverer MS rated NAN% while driving a Jeep
Driving on a combination of roads for 43000 easy going miles
The Cooper Discoverer M+S where mounted on the car (Jeep Grand Cherokee 1997 4.0 I6) when I bought it second hand. It had about 196000km on the clock at the time, unsure how long the previous owner had used them, and I sold the car at 266000km. During the time, I used the tyres all year around in the middle to southern parts of Sweden. Mid ownership, I had to replace a pair due to an unfortunate puncture on a rear tyre, which was caused by a very sharp piece of steel perforating the rubber and lining. I got a new pair for the rear axle and trucked on for another year or so. They performed excellent in snow and ice as well as in the colder months of spring and fall. The grip was excellent on all surfaces: asphalt, gravel, dirt roads, packed snow, ice, sand, grass and mud. I cannot however speak to the performance on offroad trails as I never did that stuff. Especially the grip performance on packed and loose snow on highway roads was outstanding, even when putting on the gas and blazing on at 100km/h. I could really feel that I could trust the tyres doing an excellent job at keeping the car on the road, even when plowing through slush and strings of snow on the road, only keeping the car pointing in the direction you want to go. The downsides with the tyre from my experience, was the softness of the rubber during the summer. The grip was good on dry and wet roads even around 30 degrees C, but the car felt a lot like a boat on high seas. The road feedback and especially the handling was mediocre, perhaps decent at best as quick turnings of the wheel doesn't equate to sharp turnings. Road noice was nothing really to get upset about, but I figure that summer tyres would be significantly more quite. The ride comfort was excellent though. After using the tyres for 70000km or 43000miles, the tread was shoing signs of wear on the front axle (as I got new ones on the rear), but had at least one, or perhaps two seasons left. In my opinion, if you are looking for a reliable, dependable, comfortable allround truck/4x4 tyre for daily on- and light offroad use and are not concerned with looks and handling, I would highly recommend the Cooper Discoverer M+S. As a winter tyre for your 4x4, this is excellent.

BFGoodrich AllTerrain TA KO rated 65% while driving a Land Rover Discovery Series 2 TD5
Driving on a combination of roads for 75000 average miles
I've bought these BF to get better performance off-road while using 50/50 on/off-road environment. These was the best tyres I had for weekend off-road usage or sometimes a more agressive all terrain driving and hill descent on dry or mud conditions. Very good grip off-road Good for snow, never tested on ice Not very good for sand as we need to lower pressure a lot (until about 13 PSI) compared to other softer tyres I'll change to another brand because despite I like them a lot they don't perform well on road specially on wet conditions where I drastically loose steering and break capacity They lasted for almost 6 years/75000 miles rolling every day what I consider an excellent duration

Avon Ranger rated 81% while driving a Jeep Libery
Driving on a combination of roads for 6000 average miles
They started with over 12mm of tread, they are remoulds using the old bfg all terrain pattern, they are 3PMS snow rated. I have run them on motorway, back roads, snow, deep muddy fields and confirm, they defy all expectations of a remould. They balance well although are difficult to mount due to a really stiff sidewall. They are obviously noisy compared to a road tyre, and slightly more than the Goodyear Wrangler AT that was originally fitted. Fuel economy has dropped only by 1 or 2 mpg. In snow they are strong and grippy, no squeal in rain, mud they just dig in, used recently to recover several cars bogged in at a camp site. I have run around 6000 miles, barely a mm has gone from tread.

Lassa Competus Winter 2 rated 78% while driving a Hyundai Terracan
Driving on a combination of roads for 0 average miles
Tyres are excellent on snow, slush and wet. Moderate on ice - that is normal for that type of rubber. Very good grip on snow, braking on dry could be better.

Event ML698 rated 87% while driving a Land Rover Discovery 1 1996
Driving on mostly country roads for 12000 spirited miles
I have a Land Rover Discovery 1 which I use for towing glider and car trailers and for helping as a retrieve vehicle on British rallies including driving well off-road.
The dry grip is better than expected and in the wet these tyres clear deep water with ease.
The wear rate is better than normal with such a chunky tread pattern and the steering feel is excellent as is the handling. Road-holding is good for an all-terrain tyre.
I shall definitely buy these again when the current set is worn out.
