235/50 19 Tyre Review Highlights

Nokian Snowproof 2 SUV rated 96% while driving a Mercedes Benz MB GLK 220 CDI 4 matic
Driving on a combination of roads for 500 spirited miles
Nokian excellent on snow, also excellent on wet surfaces, but what was surprising was in the dry. The Kevlar reinforced sidewall significantly reduces body roll and steering angle. The tire is direct and precise, at high performance summer levels, making the handling fantastic. This driving pleasure has not been declared by the tests carried out so far, not even the aramid reinforced sidewall which reduces the risk of punctures and dents or bubbles, very important for an off-road vehicle. Unthinkable for an SUV winter tire until recently. I had the WR SUV3, which lasted 10 years, excellent on snow, but here the step forward is very big. Well done.

Continental EcoContact 6 rated 54% while driving a Volvo XC40 T5 Plug In Hybrid
Driving on mostly town for 11900 easy going miles
In city/town speed use I have no major problems. However last year passing through Austria on the motorway late at night in heavy rain the tyres had ‘moments of tyre grip loss in straight lines when the vehicle had done less than 6000 miles from new and therefore the tread depths were good.
At just under 12000 miles I have 3mm front and 4-4.5mm rear left so I don’t think tyre wear is very good but I do except that PHEV’s and Fully electric vehicles are heavier and wear quicker.
My local driving is mostly short journeys on electric and I pride myself on the smoothness of my driving which I think is chauffeur like. Once on the motorways or in bad weather they are not as good as I would expect for an expensive tyre. I’m now considering fitting an all season tyre such as the Michellin cross contact 2

Hankook Ventus S1 evo2 SUV rated 96% while driving a Volkswagen Tiguan SE Nav 2.0 TDI 150PS 2WD 6spd Man
Driving on mostly country roads for 34500 easy going miles
Just changed front two tyres on 2019 Tiguan. 34500 miles covered. Rear tyres still only half worn.

Pretty nice tyre, a quite balance choice between handling and comfort.

Bridgestone Weather Control A005 EVO rated 54% while driving a Hyundai
Driving on a combination of roads for 20000 easy going miles
Initilally the tyres performed well on my new Hyundai Tucson Hybrid but increasingly the performance deteriorated. After 35,000 km the profile is now between 4 mm for the rear tyres and 5 mm for the front tyres. This is strange for a front wheel driven car but probably caused by cupping of the rear tyres. What I don't like about the tyres is the less than expected fuel consumption (about 10% worse than similar cars with summer tyres) The worst experience after 35,000 km is the noise of the tyres which has risen to unacceptable levels.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV rated 86% while driving a Skoda
Driving on a combination of roads for 0 average miles
I just switched from Pirelli Scorpion Verde (Seal Inside) to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 3 SUV. First review at 3000km after switching. These GY Eagle SUV tyres are definitely a more comfortable ride than the Scorpions. Softer rubbers provide very good grip in dry and excellent grip, control in wet. Do see a drop in fuel economy as the softer rubbers leads to higher rolling resistance, and these tyres are really heavy! The previous Pirelli Scorpion Verdes are way too hard and noisy especially after 30,000km. This set of GY Eagle SUV is definitely a good compromise for the comfort and excellent grip control.

Continental EcoContact 6 rated 36% while driving a Volvo XC40
Driving on a combination of roads for 1500 average miles
Had these tyres as OEM fit for two months and initially they didn't feel very grippy even in the dry. Put this down to them being new. The dry handling has slightly improved but the wet performance is appallingly bad - understeer in damp/wet conditions giving no confidence in the car getting round a corner over 60mph. After 1500 miles there's only 6mm tread left at the back and 5.5mm at the front - pretty poor. Considering replacing them already.

Yokohama Advan Sport V107 rated 49% while driving a Mercedes Benz GLA AMG 35
Driving on mostly town for 6800 average miles
The grip in wet or dry conditions is good but they are noisy tyres. Car bought new in September 2021 but I noticed quite quickly that there was cracking between the treads but it got through the first MOT ok. However, the wear is abysmal especially the fronts. Not even done 7000 miles and they are already down to 2-2.5 mm which is quite shocking. I don't drive hard so it can only be the tyre compound being far too soft. Would never buy again. Probably go for Continental next month.

Continental EcoContact 6 rated 44% while driving a Volvo XC40
Driving on a combination of roads for 12000 easy going miles
The EcoContact 6 is a terrible tyre. I had them as OE with my xc40, from new. I found them fidgety in the wet and I had no confidence in them when it came to aquaplaning. As soon as the tread was halfway worn they started wheel spinning when pulling out at junctions or onto a roundabouts in the wet at anything other than a crawl. The fronts were worn out after 12,000 miles of easy driving.

Continental Premium Contact 6 rated 87% while driving a Audi Q3
Driving on a combination of roads for 5000 average miles
Previously used Falken 310 and Pirelli PZ4. Read from previous reviews the downsides are mainly increased noise and less comfort. However, in my experience after driving with these for almost half year, and I am a someone who prefers comfort and quietness rather than all out handling, I find the noise level very liveable, hardly disturbing. And the comfort is reasonably good. To be honest, I'm not quite bothered. The performance, Wow!. Amazingly good. Esp on dry. Immediately felt after changing. The car feels more upright, less prone to lean on doing the bends and very planted on the roads. Very confidence inspiring! And the road feedback is much improved surprisingly, given the Audi has very light steering. Wet performance is also very good. I don't drive crazy fast but the difference is obvious, less ABS activation esp in wet car parks. All in all, a really good tyre and I'd happily recommend it. However, there's now the CPC 7, looks like I have to try that next!

Michelin CrossClimate 2 SUV rated 90% while driving a Volkswagen
Driving on a combination of roads for 5000 average miles
Fitted to VW Tiguan 2.0L SEL DSG 4motion. In summer use, handles predictably with decent levels of grip. Not quite as sharp handling as my previous tyres which were a summer tyre. However, the tyre compensated by feeling a bit softer, improving ride comfort. Noise levels are reasonably good. Maybe a slight low pitched noise but, certainly not intrusive. Having bought these tyres for safer winter performance without the faff of having to change tyres, I'm pleased to report that they've just cooed commendably well with the 10cm snowfall we've just had. Good traction, evidenced by coping with slopes which left other cars stranded and spinning there wheels. Maybe the rating should include a score for smugness. In summary, not a cheap tyre but the performance justifies the price. Good, comfort orientated summer performance, Excellent in snow conditions. Would buy again.
