BMW X1 X Drive Tyre Review Highlights

Writing about the Pirelli P Zero AS Plus 3 given 69% (225-45-17-)

tires are part of a "cold season" set up, on 19" wheels on an X1. For the most part, they perform well, I have not yet pushed the car hard on the tires since the weather is very cold now, but during one session of fun, the tires did slip out slightly on dry road, the temp was low, 37F, but on dry road it should not have given in that easily during a semi aggressive lane change at 80mph.

For my 2011 BMW X1 E84 X-Drive I bought a new set of 4 of these run-flat tyres. The fronts are 225/45/18, the rears 255/40/18. In the 2 years of use I can say they are an excellent, but not exceptional, tyre. My driving is a mix of inner city urban, open road highway and rough unsealed gravel roads. They perform fine in the city, nothing really negative to report here. On the open road/highway I find them noisier than I'd hoped and the ride is firm and at times unforgiving over bumps, so much so that at speed I have to have two hands on the wheel so as not to be thrown off-track! This is probably my biggest criticism of what I assume is the characteristic hard and lumpy ride of these run-flats. On the positive side, they handle in and out of corners at speed well. I'm considering changing to non run-flats, probably Michelin Pilot Sport 4 front and rear as a well-reviewed, quieter and more comfortable alternative.

Love driving with this tire. Predictable drift performance in snow and great snow grips in straight lines. This tire gives me so much confidence in the snow that I actually look forward to having snow on the road first time in my life! Was able to keep around 70 to 80% of my dry speed in the snow with this tire and pull off some crazy tight drift U turns and drift thanks to it’s predictability. Dry and wet performance when there’s no snow are really good as well.

Low profile 22545 r19 run flats; rough ride, slightest road imperfection rattles the entire X1. They do corner well, hope they wear fast like other reviews, can't wait to replace with a more comfortable (non-runflat) all season tire. Summer tires won't work at all even in light snow.

My only problem with these tyres (on a BMW F48 X1 M-Sport) is the excessive noise. Speed related and it completely overwhelms the radio at 50mph. Otherwise a great improvement on the original show-off 19" wheels

I´ve had the Asymmetric 2 and been very pleased, with comfort, wear, and performance. Thats why I chose the As.3

Looks: The Asymmetric 3 has a smaller rimprotector compared to the As. 2, but still ok.
Performance: I have only driven approx. 2000 km, but so far they feel great - quite similar to the As.2 (even though I know they have improved the wet and dry performance)
Wear: No visable wear at all after 2000 km, and If they are as good as the As.2 - they will last a long time!

I'm running 225/50/17 on a BMW X1 X-drive M-sport. I'll deal withe downside first. This tyre, on my car, exhibits a strange handling in high speed corners. Example would be a sweeping motorway slip road. The car feels like it's is squirming on the tread blocks, which is disconcerting, but probably not actually a problem and just a consequence of the the softer rubber and sipes etc. If you don't drive at high speed you wouldn't notice this and it may improve as the tyre wears.

In every other regard, they are an excellent tyre. Quiet and comfortable in all conditions, especially as I'm coming from run flat summers that are an inch bigger. It's actually a pleasure to put them on. They feel sure footed in cold temps, and have excellent snow traction and braking. I live up an unadopted farm track high in the Pennines, and have tested these in deep fresh snow and compressed snow and ice. They excel in these conditions giving great confidence and control.

Overall, has great winter and cold properties, but slightly strange high speed handling character.
